Pumped Storage Power Plant – Porr Commences Preparatory Work

Ebensee pumped storage power plant

By starting on the Ebensee pumped storage power plant in Upper Austria, Porr has commenced its responsibility.

Involving the construction of the Traunsee outlet structure, the tunneling and gallery construction, the construction of two plumb shafts, as well as the digging of an inclined shaft with a 60° incline, this contract with €167m (£145m) value was granted by Energie AG Oberösterreich.

In order to pumping the water from Lake Traun around 500m up into a storage facility in the mountains, this project is going to enable the conditions. Also the output capacity of cavern power plant will be 170MW and its storage capacity is due to be 1.32 million m3.

The scheduled date for completion of the new facility for testing is end of 2027 and operation time is February 2028.

According to Porr CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss: “Pumped storage power plants can absorb large amounts of energy and release it again during times of peak demand. This makes them a much-needed part of the energy transition.”

Considering that Porr is emphasizing on its the Green and Lean strategy, is installing photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the construction offices and worker accommodation and will use EVs on site.

Additionally, construction process of the caverns and galleries for two Austrian projects (the Limberg III pumped storage power plant in Salzburg, and Rodund in Vorarlberg) is currently undergoing by Porr alongside with Forbach in Germany.
