Joint Technical Event – Geopolymer Concrete in Tunneling and other Applications: Developments in Ultra-Low Carbon Concrete

London Power Tunnels Shaft

Thr IStructE, 47-58 Bastwick Street, London, EC1V3PS, will host the joint event of London & Southeast Region Concrete Society and the British Tunnelling Society on Thursday 9th November 2023 at 18:00 hrs, which’s central topic is the presentation being Geopolymer Concrete in Tunnelling and other applications: Developments in ultra-low carbon concrete.

In order to future sustainability of infrastructure projects, embodied Carbon reduction is essential, so the shaft and tunnel linings contribute in the region of 70% of embodied carbon associated with a tunneling project. Also ability of the geopolymer concrete for decreasing the embodied carbon of concrete by up to 80% is obvious.

Illustrating the developments made over the last decade in the testing as well as use of geopolymer concrete and how adoption is increasing worldwide, will be the contents of Charles Allen’s presentation. Then he is going to talk about applications for geopolymer concrete including tunnel linings and its high durability performance.

Finally, Richard Sutherden will set out a case study of testing and use on London Power Tunnels Phase 2 for National Grid and how a collaborative approach between Client, Contractor, and Designer is essential for future adoption and culminated in the World’s largest cement free concrete pour to date.

In 2000 he was appointed of Managing Director of the International Centre for Geotechnics and Underground Construction based in Zurich, which is a foundation responsible for the training and qualification of staff for tunneling projects, and this was following several years working in the construction chemicals industry in Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.

More recently, Charles has been involved as a consultant to several different organizations, within the civil engineering and tunneling sectors and is currently advising joint venture contractors on the Deep Tunnel Sewer System, Phase 2 project in Singapore the Central Interceptor Tunnel in Auckland, New Zealand and the Thames Tideway project.

Charles is a fellow of the Concrete Society and a member of the ICT.

Richard Sutherden
Richard is on the Technical Expert Support Panel for LPT2 and is the Engineering Director for J Murphy & Sons. A Chartered Civil Engineer and Fellow of the ICE he has 27 years of experience in the construction industry, as a contractor, consultant, and client. He leads the engineering function for the Murphy Group with oversight on technical matters as well leading quality control, site engineering, temporary works, digital engineering, innovation, and tunneling input across all sectors and regions.

The vast majority of his technical experience has been in tunneling on projects such as the Jubilee Line Extension, The Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Lee Tunnel, Tideway, and more recently LPT Phase 2 and the North Bristol Relief Sewer.
