In order to advancing the construction of the new Virgolo railway tunnel with three tracks and the moving of the Merano line junction, the Bolzano City Council gave the go ahead for RFI on the 17/04/2023. Meanwhile, the new Virgolo tunnel is going to allow the Merano line to enter the Bolzano station independently, eliminating the current use of the Brenner line. While the scheduled date for commencing works is 2024, the intention is completing this process in 2026 by the start of the Olympic Games.
Additionally, following completion of the rail tunnel other tunnel is due to be built next to it, for a southbound dual carriageway. The existing road tunnel will be used as a northbound dual carriageway, whereas the current Virgolo tunnel on the A22 motorway will remain in its existing state.
