Downer Completes Sale of Australian Transport Projects Business

Australia - Sydney

As the responsible of delivering major construction services to mainly government, including the design and construction of tunnels, roads, rail, signaling, station works as well as bridges, the Australian Transport Projects business has been awarded to Gamuda’s Australian subsidiary by Downer.

The newly acquired business is due to operate standalone within the Gamuda group of companies, trading as DT Infrastructure Pty Ltd (DTI).

According to Downer CEO Peter Tompkins: “Completion of the A$212m (US$144m) sale was an important milestone in the company’s portfolio simplification strategy. Going forward in the transport sector, Downer will concentrate on enhancing its market leading positions in rolling stock, road maintenance and New Zealand infrastructure delivery.”

When the acquisition was announced in February, Gamuda group nanaging director Dato’ Lin Yun Ling said: “The move would support a wider variety of project delivery for customers in Australia. This acquisition is a strategic move for Gamuda in line with its regional growth plan. The Group is targeting to achieve a sustainable A$3bn (US$2.04bn) of annual revenue from the enlarged Australia business within the next three years.”

He also added: “We believe there are very substantial growth opportunities in Australia, and this move enables us to expand not only the volume of projects we do but also the different aspects of transport infrastructure work we will be undertaking – from large tunneling jobs to medium-sized projects, rail, track construction and maintenance, line electrification, delivery of depots and stabling yards, and construction of railway stations.”

With the revenue of over than A$3.3bn, last year Gamuda Australia secured three major project wins which were: The Sydney Metro West – Western Tunnelling Package, in consortium with Laing O’Rourke; Coffs Harbour Bypass; and M1 Raymond Terrace extension.
