Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and Scarborough Subway Extension

In the middle of December 2021, the TBMs, which are going to excavate the tunnels for the Scarborough Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension in Toronto, reached the ports of Oshawa and Hamilton.

Transporting on a massive cargo ship, called Jumbo Vision, on 26 November 2021 the intended machine, that is due to bore the 7.8 km Scarborough Subway Extension, abandoned Dutch shores in Westdorpe and traveled across the Atlantic Ocean, into the St. Lawrence Seaway, and finally down to Lake Ontario, before docking at the port of Oshawa, while its pieces for the Scarborough Subway Extension have been conveyed to the launch shaft site in at Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road in Scarborough.

Meanwhile, in order to dig the tunnels among Renforth Drive and Scarlett Road with 6.5 km length for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension the two TBMs left Antwerp on 20/11/2021, before taking a similar path across the Atlantic Ocean, down the St. Lawrence Seaway, before arriving at the port of Hamilton.

The determined date for receiving remains of the TBM parts is the current month and following that the team will commence the process of assembling the machines, a process that takes months.

Communities along the Scarborough Subway Extension and Eglinton Crosstown West Extension presented names for the newest members of the Metrolinx TBM family. More than 340 submissions were proposed for both projects during the first phase of the contest, which closed on 19 November 2021, whereas the list below was the community’s voted shortlists of names picked by the contests’ judging panels up until the 22/12/2021:

Scarlett and Ren, Squirrel and Beaver, Tobi & Sauga, Rexy and Renny, Richie and Rosie for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension;

Diggy Scardust, Scar-burrow, Scarbie SX, Rouge and Elizabeth for the Scarborough Subway Extension.

The last days of January is the scheduled date for announcing winners’ names.
