KOLKATA: Even though the transporter continues until 6 a.m. on Monday, with the Sealdah Flyover being out of bounds, TBM S616, aka Urvi, is supposed to cover a distance of 25 m below by Sunday noon. Having reached the flyover on Friday evening, Urvi is about to carve the east-bound tunnel for the East-West Metro. It’s expected to bust through the wall of the next East-West Sealdah Metro station at the far end of the railway station in a week.<\/p>\n
\nIt is going to be a landmark moment as the TBM (tunnel boring machine) crosses over to Sealdah station. Two of India’s busiest railway stations, Howrah and Sealdah, will be linked directly through the Hooghly River via a transport tube. Another landmark would thereby be reached by the East-West Metro scheme, a design marvel in itself.<\/p>\n
\nThis is the last underground tunneling leg for the 16 km East-West Metro that will finally join Sector V with Howrah.
\nEven as the flyover was barricaded in both directions, about 20 traffic marshals were engaged by ITD ITD-Cementation contractors to divert the vehicles, two-wheelers, and pedestrians. ITD officials including Sumit Mukherjee were on a 10 am flyover with traffic guide caps.<\/p>\n
