Following its latest public consultation, published on 8 October, TfL reported no issues requiring significant changes to the proposed scheme. The authority is preparing to submit a Transport and Works Act Order application in 2027.<\/p>\n

The extension would branch from the existing DLR beyond Gallions Reach, serving new stations at Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead. The river crossing would comprise two approximately 1.5km-long bored tunnels, connected by cross-passages. Cut-and-cover sections would link the deep tunnels to the surface railway infrastructure on both sides of the river.<\/p>\n

Single TBM to Construct Both Tunnels<\/strong><\/h5>\n

TfL plans to use one tunnel boring machine (TBM) for both drives. The machine would be assembled in a launch shaft at Beckton Riverside and excavate the first tunnel to a reception shaft at Thamesmead. It would then be recovered, turned around and prepared to bore the parallel tunnel back to Beckton Riverside.<\/p>\n

The shafts would remain as permanent emergency and evacuation access structures. The TBM is expected to pass predominantly through chalk beneath the river, while a conveyor system would transport excavated material back to the Beckton Riverside site for treatment, reuse or removal.<\/p>\n

TfL anticipates continuous, 24-hour TBM operations to maintain stable ground conditions and minimise prolonged stoppages. The wider tunnelling programme, including cut-and-cover works, is expected to take approximately four years.<\/p>\n

Beckton Riverside to Serve as the Main Tunnelling Site<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Beckton Riverside has been selected for its road connections, available working space and access to the Thames. TfL says large TBM components could potentially be delivered by barge from the Port of Tilbury, reducing heavy road transport.<\/p>\n

The site would accommodate TBM assembly, precast tunnel lining segments, excavated material management, storage and construction facilities.<\/p>\n

Housing and Employment Benefits<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The proposed extension could support the development of up to 30,000 homes and 10,000 jobs across Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead. Initial services to Thamesmead are planned at intervals of eight to ten minutes.<\/p>\n

TfL received 553 responses to its latest consultation, including 26 from stakeholder organisations. Subject to government funding and statutory approvals, construction could start by 2029, with the extension expected to open in the early 2030s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
