The Trump administration has lodged an appeal against a federal court ruling that compels the US government to resume payments for the $16bn Hudson Tunnel Project connecting New York and New Jersey, reported Reuters.<\/p>\n
The initiative, overseen by the Gateway Development Commission, includes building a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River and rehabilitating the existing North River Tunnel, which has been in service since 1910.<\/p>\n
The North River Tunnel, a key artery for Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT, has been plagued by regular delays and storm-related damage, especially following Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which exposed critical vulnerabilities in the region\u2019s transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n
When completed, the Hudson Tunnel Project will deliver nearly nine miles of new passenger rail track, including almost five miles constructed via tunnel boring beneath the river.<\/p>\n
The new twin-tube tunnel is set to open in 2035, and the comprehensive rehabilitation of the North River Tunnel is scheduled for completion in 2038.<\/p>\n
Once finished, the corridor will expand from two tracks to four, a move intended to increase both capacity and reliability for hundreds of thousands of commuters who rely daily on the national rail network\u2019s busiest segment.<\/p>\n
The project, which has already received about $2bn in federal support, halted briefly in February amid a dispute between the Trump administration and Congress over grant payments.<\/p>\n
While a court-ordered release of funds allowed construction to resume, the project\u2019s long-term financial security remains in limbo following the Trump administration\u2019s recent appeal.<\/p>\n
Despite the uncertainty, the Gateway Development Commission has pressed ahead, emphasising the urgency of modernising the tunnels to avoid service disruptions caused by frequent emergency repairs.<\/p>\n
