The Hong Kong Government has gazetted amendments to the Mass Transit Railway \u2013 Lantau and Airport Railway Phase II Hong Kong Station Extended Overrun Tunnels scheme, updating proposals first approved more than two decades ago.<\/p>\n
The project will extend the existing overrun tunnels approximately 500m eastwards from Hong Kong Station beneath Lung Wo Road. It will also include construction of a ventilation and emergency access building to the east of Yiu Sing Street, together with associated railway works.<\/p>\n
According to the Government, the revised scheme reflects changes to the layout and design of the railway and associated facilities, as well as infrastructure subsequently constructed around the site since the original scheme was gazetted in 2001.<\/p>\n
The amendments cover the General Layout Plan, Creation of Rights of Temporary Occupation of Land Plan, and Control of Building Plans and Commencement of Work Plan.<\/p>\n
The Government said the latest design has also sought to optimise construction methods and minimise the project\u2019s impact on the Central Harbourfront.<\/p>\n
The extended overrun tunnels are intended to improve operational capacity at Hong Kong Station and support increased demand generated by development on Lantau Island, including the Tung Chung New Town Extension.<\/p>\n
The works form part of wider improvements associated with the Tung Chung Line Extension (TUE), which is extending the existing railway approximately 1.3km from Tung Chung Station to a new Tung Chung West Station.<\/p>\n
The TUE also includes construction of the new intermediate Tung Chung East Station. Its delivery requires modifications to approximately 1.2km of the existing railway between Sunny Bay and Tung Chung stations.<\/p>\n
Construction of the two new stations and associated railway sections began in May 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2029.<\/p>\n
The Hong Kong Station overrun tunnel element will follow separately. Construction is expected to begin once the amended railway scheme has been authorised, with the main works scheduled for completion by 2032.<\/p>\n
The Government said the additional infrastructure would enhance train operating efficiency and increase the capacity of the railway network to accommodate future transport demand from Tung Chung and other developments across Lantau.<\/p>\n
Members of the public have until October 20, 2026, to submit objections to the amendments under Hong Kong\u2019s Railways Ordinance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
