{"id":20238,"date":"2026-08-21T13:34:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T13:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=20238"},"modified":"2026-08-21T13:34:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T13:34:50","slug":"thames-power-tunnel-drive-reaches-halfway-mark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=20238","title":{"rendered":"Thames power tunnel drive reaches halfway mark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tunnelling for National Grid\u2019s new power tunnel under the River Thames has reached the halfway point.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrovial BEMO JV has completed more than 1.1km of the 2.2km drive from Essex to Kent and installed 840 rings.<\/p>\n<p>TBM Caroline \u2013 a Herrenknecht mixshield machine \u2013 has excavated more than 19,000m3 and is progressing at more than 24m a day.<\/p>\n<p>The high-voltage tunnel, which lies 35m underground, will replace the existing Thames Cable Tunnel constructed in the 1960s. The project is part of National Grid\u2019s Great Grid Upgrade to future-proof the UK\u2019s electricity transmission network.<\/p>\n<p>TBM Caroline began her journey in May from the 48m-deep launch shaft in Tilbury. The 15m-diameter launch shaft, and the retrieval shaft at Gravesend, were built using Europe\u2019s largest vertical shaft sinking machine, manufactured by Herrenknecht.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tunnelling for National Grid\u2019s new power tunnel under the River Thames has reached the halfway point.
