{"id":18723,"date":"2025-03-01T07:14:21","date_gmt":"2025-03-01T07:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=18723"},"modified":"2025-03-01T07:14:21","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T07:14:21","slug":"construction-of-two-railway-tunnels-in-prague","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=18723","title":{"rendered":"Construction of two railway tunnels in Prague"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to advancing transport infrastructure in the capital city, Czech Republic\u2019s Ministry of Transport and Spr\u00e1va \u017deleznic (S\u017d) have unveiled plans to build two underground railway tunnels in Prague.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The responsibility of the operation, maintenance, and modernisation of the railway network in the Czech Republic is up to S\u017d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With 10.6km length, these two tunnels are set to boost Prague\u2019s train capacity, decongest public transport, and integrate regional connectivity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the first tunnel is going to run north-to-south, commencing at a new partially covered station at the Florenc metro interchange, connecting to the junction near Sm\u00edchov and Vr\u0161ovice, the second, northeast-to-southwest tunnel will run from a new underground station at Karl\u00edn to Sm\u00edchov, with stops at V\u00e1clavsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed and Karolovo n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the aim of facilitating train transfers and reducing congestion in the city centre, both tunnels are due to meet at a two-storey underground interchange beneath Prague Hlavn\u00ed n\u00e1dra\u017e\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Enhancing passenger movement and operational efficiency, each tunnel will accommodate 16 trains per hour per direction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The scheduled date for completion of this project that is part of the Czech Republic\u2019s most ambitious rail investments, with an estimated cost of CZK185bn ($7.7bn), is\u00a0 2047.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Prague transport head Zden\u011bk H\u0159ib: &#8220;The rail tunnels will not only boost train capacity but also relieve overcrowding on metro, tram, and bus routes. The project brings new rail capacities right in the city centre, including several stops that will shorten the walking distance for passengers.The result will not only be a higher attractiveness of rail transport but also the relief of the busiest public transport sections in the centre. The enhanced railway will also attract some traffic from the roads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The advantages of this project would be decreasing the congestion of Prague\u2019s public transport system, improving train connectivity, enhancing travel times, as well as providing sustainable alternatives to road-based travel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new underground stations will be strategically positioned to reduce walking distances and improve passenger access.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While boosting the connection between the new tunnels and Prague\u2019s metro will be up to Florenc Metro Interchange, Karl\u00edn Station will serve the northeast-to-southwest corridor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Additionally, V\u00e1clavsk\u00e9 n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed and Karolovo n\u00e1m\u011bst\u00ed will enhance access to key commercial and cultural districts, and Sm\u00edchov Station will facilitate regional and long-distance travel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 2035 is determined date for commencing tunneling works and they will be completed in 2047.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prague\u2019s transport authorities would finalise construction plans, secure funding and approvals, conduct environmental studies, and collaborate with European transport networks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Praha deputy mayor Petr Hlav\u00e1\u010dek said: &#8220;The biggest transport problem in Praha is not transport in Praha itself, but in the metropolitan region. Praha\u2019s modal split is highly in favour of public transport, but what is crushing Praha is regional transport, where the supply and capacity are insufficient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">S\u017d construction planning department director Pavel Paidar said: &#8220;The new routes will help separate long-distance and regional transport.
