{"id":18508,"date":"2025-01-11T10:34:34","date_gmt":"2025-01-11T10:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=18508"},"modified":"2025-01-11T10:34:34","modified_gmt":"2025-01-11T10:34:34","slug":"brasov-sighisoara-railway-project-aktor-romania-deploys-fourth-tbm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=18508","title":{"rendered":"Brasov-Sighisoara Railway Project &#8211; AKTOR Romania deploys fourth TBM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to advancing the Brasov-Sighisoara railway project, AKTOR Romania, part of the construction company AKTOR Group, has deployed its fourth tunnel boring machine (TBM).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As one of the few in Europe to use four TBMs simultaneously, this project is marking a major lanmark in modernising Romania\u2019s railway network and is part of the vital Rhine-Danube European Corridor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This project upgrades the Apa\u021ba \u2013 Ca\u021ba section of the railway line.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With1,500 tonnes weight and 100m length, the newly activated TBM\u00a0 joins three previously activated TBMs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The location of launching this TBM is through a hillside near Raco\u0219, complementing the work of the third TBM, which has been tunneling deep into the mountain for three months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Forming the northern tunnel pair, the two newly activated TBMs are due to create two 5.1km tunnels heading toward Homorod.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also, the responsibility tunneling the southern pair, which consists of twin 6.9km tunnels toward Apa\u021ba, is up to the first two TBMs, activated earlier in 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The daily advance of each TBM is 10-15m, working six days a week with one day set aside for maintenance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Brasov-Sighisoara railway project director Sotirios Koropoulis: &#8220;The installation of a TBM and the start of boring are intricate tasks that require careful planning, preparation, and execution. TBMs allow for greater precision, safety, and environmental responsibility in tunnel construction compared to traditional methods. This approach not only opens up new infrastructure possibilities but also reduces the impact on surrounding areas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of the Rhine-Danube Corridor, the Restoration of the Brasov \u2013 Simeria Railway Line project intends for a maximum speed of 160 km\/h.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The determined budget for Brasov \u2013 Sighisoara section, including the Apata \u2013 Cata LOT 2 sub-section, is \u20ac573m and is co-financed by the European Union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As it is staded this development will be AKTOR\u2019s largest ongoing project in Romania, whereas AKTOR Romania is also managing the restoration of two other sub-sections on the same railway line, Brasov \u2013 Apa\u021ba and Ca\u021ba \u2013 Sighisoara, with a combined budget of over \u20ac186m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In order to advancing the Brasov-Sighisoara railway project, AKTOR Romania, part of the construction company AKTOR Group, has deployed its fourth tunnel boring machine (TBM).
