The line extension, which is subject to planning and funding approval, could be operational by 2040.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Bakerloo Line was built in 1906 and currently terminates at Elephant &amp; Castle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement on LinkedIn, Steve Bell, WW+P regional director \u2013 Europe, said the design work would provide \u201ctangible transport connectivity to a traditionally under-served part of London\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is an historic opportunity to support growth in one of London\u2019s most ambitious Opportunity Areas, delivering the new homes and jobs this government continues to highlight the demand for. The extension of the Bakerloo Line brings greater connectivity to the area and provides opportunity to enhance it further through new town centres that include community hubs, workspaces and homes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">WW+P will work with Aecom on the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2022, TfL appointed Dr Sauer &amp; Partners and Arup to undertake feasibility studies for five packages of rail tunnelling works, and another for cross-passages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An extension to the Bakerloo Line was mooted in 2014. The current\u00a0upgrade\u00a0to Elephant &amp; Castle Station, which includes a new station box and passenger tunnels, has been designed to support the proposed extension to Lewisham.
