In order to excavating a 150m-long tunnel for the new pipework system, which is due to replace the old outfall,TBM Harriet has been delivered to site for United Utilities Bolton Wastewater Treatment works.<\/p>\n
With intention of meeting Harriet, local school children from the nearby St Saviour C of E Primary School visited the site and some of the pupils from have their designs displayed on hoarding around the site after a competition to design a poster of what not to flush down the loo.<\/p>\n
The advantages of this \u00a3110m project will be raising the treatment works\u2019 capacity by 20% and decreasing the number of storm overflows during heavy rain.<\/p>\n
Considering that treating the wastewater to a higher standard is necessary for this project, there will be major enhancements to the treatment processes at the works to use more innovative technology. The storm overflow outfall pipe will also be relocated as part of the project.<\/p>\n
According to United Utilities third-part co-ordinator Catherine Coupe: “The works are continuing at pace across the treatment works at the moment and this project will deliver real benefits to the water quality in the River Irwell.”<\/p>\n
