{"id":1650,"date":"2020-07-13T04:29:49","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T04:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=1650"},"modified":"2020-07-13T04:29:49","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T04:29:49","slug":"tbm-for-thames-tideway-final-drive-arrives-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=1650","title":{"rendered":"TBM for Thames Tideway Final Drive Arrives in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A giant TBM (tunnel boring machine) named Selina, which is set to build the final 5.5 km stretch of London\u2019s new super sewer has arrived in the capital.<br \/>\nThis week, Selina, was delivered to Tideway\u2019s Chambers Wharf site in Bermondsey, where she will be lifted onto the site before starting her underground journey toward Abbey Mills Pumping Station later in the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nTotally, a number of six TBMs are being used to build London\u2019s super sewer (with two already finished tunneling), meaning that Selina is the final machine to start work \u2013 but she is also the deepest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1653 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/krtst-aug-19-8-1-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Starting her journey more than 60 meters below the ground, she will tunnel on a little decline toward the pumping station in the east of London.<br \/>\nThe Deputy Delivery Manager for the eastern section of the project, Maurice Gallagher, said: \u201cTo welcome Selina to site is a great moment for Tideway \u2013 and for London. Although there is much work still to be done, her arrival in the capital means we\u2019re on the final stretch \u2013 and closer than ever to a cleaner, healthier River Thames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nBy using a giant vessel called the Skylift 3000, Selina was delivered to Chambers Wharf, having travelled 800 km over the water from Herrenknecht via the port of Kehl, Germany, to the banks of the Thames in central London.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1654 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Thames-Tideway-lots-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"321\" \/><br \/>\nTideway has consigned for using the river to transport construction materials where possible to decrease congestion and our impact on air quality \u2013 transporting Selina over the water, instead of road, prohibited about 100,000 km of road transport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nVia a public vote, each of Tideway\u2019s six TBMs was named in honor of inspirational women from history connected with the local area.<br \/>\nDr Selina Fox, who founded the Bermondsey Medical Mission in 1904, was the person whom Selina is named after. Bermondsey Medical Mission is a small clinic and eight-bed hospital provided medical and spiritual care to the most vulnerable women and children in the area, and continues to this day as a local charity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nTunneling chiefly through chalk, TBM Selina will head north east towards the already-built Lee Tunnel, which links Abbey Mills Pumping Station to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nChambers Wharf in Bermondsey is an essential site for the Tideway project \u2013 the launch site of Selina, but also the site at which TBMs Annie (soon to begin her journey from Greenwich) and Ursula (currently en route from Battersea) will finish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Source: Tunnel Business Magazine<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A giant TBM (tunnel boring machine) named Selina, which is set to build the final 5.5 km stretch of London\u2019s new super sewer has arrived in the capital.
