In order to advancing the W2BC project of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) scheme, a design contract was granted to Cowi by Network Rail.<\/p>\n
With intention of railway improvements across the Pennines to improve connections between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York, the TRU is a major program, while the W2BC project covers the 29km between Stalybridge and Huddersfield.<\/p>\n
For developing engineering solutions for the route with the objective of minimizing impacts on adjacent communities, decreasing construction duration and costs, all with sustainability and safety oversight, Cowi is going to collaborate with a major delivery organization.<\/p>\n
The tunneling process of three Victorian era tunnels, including Stalybridge tunnel, Scout tunnel and Standedge tunnel will be up to Cowi, whereas the works include accommodation for W12 gauge clearance and electrification, including 1.7km of track slab installation to allow for track lowering. This will enable larger freight trains to pass through.<\/p>\n
Additionally, concentrating on retaining walls and earthwork stability, and off-track drainage enhancements to increase flood resilience, this company is due to deliver geotechnical work. <\/p>\n
