With 6.87m diameter, CRCHI<\/a>‘s innovative Channel Express slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) broke through in the TWRP Pipeline-C1 Tunnel on November 22. As a vital addition to Singapore’s water transmission network, this subsea water transmission tunnel with 1.6km length and 6m diameter marked penetration of the TBM as the successful culmination. Reaching a maximum distance of 17.6 meters per day and a monthly high of 289.6 meters in rocky conditions, this TBM set impressive records and commissioned on February 1st.<\/p>\n

While the responsibility of overseeing this crucial infrastructure project is up to Singapore’s National Water Agency, this subsea tunnel connects the Singapore Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (TWRP) to the core industrial area of Jurong Island. Also its construction encountered challenges, navigating high water pressure and various rock formations like mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone, including fractured zones that complicated excavation.<\/p>\n

Custom-designe of this slurry TBM and integrating the intelligent monitoring systems for safe and efficient tunneling, was done CRCHI’s R&D team, whereas the TBM boasts cutting-edge features like a high-pressure main drive seal, a two-stage stone crushing system (jaw + roller), synchronized bi-component grouting, and an anti-blocking system for slurry circulation. Meanwhile, the possibility of video monitoring of the main bearing and excavation chamber, was provided by incorporation of a telescopic camera device, a first in Singapore’s tunnel projects. Additionally, an intelligent excavation management system enables real-time monitoring of excavation volume.<\/p>\n
