Tideway<\/a>\u2019s staff charity partners, Felix Project and Time & Talents, with six lucky winners given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in what is thought to be London\u2019s deepest-ever bike ride. <\/p>\nBeginning at the Tideway project\u2019s site in Battersea, the cyclists cycled east toward Blackfriars and back again, achieving a total of 10km under central London.<\/p>\n
As the tunnel is constructed on a slight slope to enable storm flows to travel through gravity toward the treatment works, the cyclists rode the first leg of the ride \u2018downhill\u2019 and the return leg \u2018uphill\u2019, although the 1:790 gradient meant the climb was almost imperceptible. <\/p>\n
Tideway regulation manager, Heather Glass, told Cycling Weekly: \u201cI\u2019ve been on the project for seven years. But it was my first time down in the tunnel.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also added: \u201cIt\u2019s definitely the weirdest ride I’ve done. It’s really quite something, we were lowered down on a man rider, which is a cage that hangs from a crane, to the bottom of the shaft, where the bikes were waiting for us. Then we set off.
