{"id":10073,"date":"2023-01-25T07:25:03","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T07:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=10073"},"modified":"2023-01-25T07:25:03","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T07:25:03","slug":"bts-february-lectures-concentration-is-gold-mine-conversion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tunnelingworld.com\/?p=10073","title":{"rendered":"BTS February Lecture&#8217;s Concentration is Gold Mine Conversion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Being considered as the world&#8217;s first conversion of a gold mine into a hydroelectric pumped storage facility, the Kidston pumped storage project is the topic of a joint BTS \/ Min South meeting in London on February 9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While Kidston is the first pumped hydro plant that has been constructed in Australia since 1984, it also is setting a benchmark for similar conversions globally and this is due to be described by Clare Onal, principal engineer at Mott MacDonald.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The responsibility of advancing this transformative project is up to renewable energy and storage company Genex Power and it is going to be the cornerstone of a renewable energy zone (REZ) that will provide clean, cheap and firm power to the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Including two gold mine pits with more than 100 years of operations, the pits of existing site are slated to be converted into the top and bottom reservoirs for the Kidston pumped storage project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to allowing the transfer of water between the reservoirs, this project will also require significant underground infrastructure, including a large powerhouse cavern, waterway shafts as well as tunnels. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On 9 February 2023 the ICE in Great George St, London, will host this meeting at 18:00 (GMT).
