Moti Jheel-Nayaganj Underground Section

The JV Gulermak-Sam India, on 17/01/2023, achieved a significant milestone with the breakthrough of the Terratec tunnel boring machine S92. This occurred at Nayaganj Station on the 3.62 km Moti Jheel-Nayaganj underground section (Package KNPCC-05) of the 32.4 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project. The mentioned section contains four stations at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj.

The machine is named Tatya after Tatya Tope and has a 6.52 m diameter and 120 m length. It was rolled out in August 2022 from Bada Chauraha Station and has driven 1025m of the down-line tunnel till now.

Nana tunnel boring machine (S93) was activated in June 2022 from the shaft in Bada Chaurha and has also driven 1025 m to reach the Nayaganj station. The two tunnel boring machines will be transferred to the launch shaft at Chunniganj from the recovery shaft in Nayaganj to drive back to Bada Chaurha and finish the first underground section.

Since 2020, the Joint Venture Italferr (Italy)/Typsa (Spaun) has been engaged in the project as well. They are the General Consultants for the design, procurement and supervision of the works respective to the two Metro railway lines of Kanpur and Agra, in the Uttar Pradesh state.

Earlier in March 2022, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) granted to the Afcons-Sam India Consortium the section from Nayaganj to Transport Nagar, with three cut & cover stations at Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti and Transport Nagar (Package KNPCC-06).
