Arrival of Terratec TBM S88 in Meerut

Meerut Central Station Terratec TBM Breakthrough

Following completion of the 1823.39 m long tunnel between Bhainsali to Meerut Central Stations (Package 8), the Sudarshan 8.1 that is a Terratec TBM EPB S88, reached the Meerut Central RRTS Station on 15 December 2022. Being commissioned in March 2022, the machine experienced its first tunnel breakthrough. Currently, in order to constructing a 1 km tunnel towards Begumpul, the TBM S88 is due to be dismantled, taken back to Bhaisali and relaunched.

The Package 8 contract with EUR 173.59 million (INR15.29bn) value was awarded to Afcons Infrastructure in November 2020, whereas its deadline was 1310-day (3.6 year). Building of six twin tunnels from Brahampuri DN Ramp to Begumpul UP Ramp with 3 underground stations (Meerut Central, Bhaisali & Begumpul) built by using the cut & cover method, are the contents of this contract.

While October 2022 was the date of Afcons Infrastructure’s first breakthrough for Package 8 with Terratec TBM S90 (named Sudharshan 8.3), the machine completed the 750 m section from Begumpul UP Ramp located at Gandhi Park and Begumpul Station.

Afcons has now four other breakthroughs pending.
