The commencing date of TBM Rachel’s drive was in October, which had a halt every 1.5 m (5 feet) in order to construct a ring of the tunnel wall. Already, around 106 m (350 feet) of the tunnel has been completed, and the pace is estimated to increase once the supporting “trailing gear” has been lowered into the access shaft at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant and connected to the TBM. Construction of an 11 km (7-mile) tunnel between the treatment plant in Carson and Royal Palms Beach by Rachel will require almost 4 years while it is expected to attain Figueroa Street in the first half of 2022.
A network of monitoring devices has also been installed along the tunnel alignment that will detect small amounts of movement and vibration.
